A fiscal sponsor serves as an intermediary that gives funders the ability to provide financial support to start-up initiatives that do not yet have legal nonprofit status. Through conversations with partner organizations, Frontline Solutions identified a potential gap in the market for fiscal sponsors that explicitly seek to impact communities of color by providing supports to entrepreneurs of color. Frontline approached the Ford Foundation, the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, and Casey Family Programs to conduct a study exploring fiscal sponsorship opportunities for racial equity-focused organizations. After performing a landscape scan, conducting key informant interviews, and administering surveys, Frontline discovered a significant market gap for racial equity-focused organizations seeking fiscal sponsorship. Frontline then worked with a diverse group of field leaders to identify potential next steps to build the capacity of this field.
